When God Chooses Your Mate

When we are lost in the woods, the sight of a signpost is a great matter.
C. S. Lewis

Do you think God cares about the little details of your life? What about those life decisions that will affect your entire life? Would he love you enough to send you a sign if you asked for it? This story is true, every word of it. I know because it happened in my own family.

My older son had dated a girl sometime before, and they broke up. Time went by, and they each went on to pursue other relationships. The young woman was pretty serious about a particular relationship. Her cousin, who was a friend of mine and my son’s, called one day and asked for my son’s phone number. She was just sure that her cousin and my son were meant to be together.

After speaking with her, my son called me. He was torn about what to do. It was evident He still cared about her. But he did not want to mess up what this young woman had in another relationship if it was not the right thing. He asked what I would do. I asked him if in his typical day to day routine he ever crosses paths with her. He said no. I asked him when the last time he saw her was. He stated about a year before that. I asked him if he thought who he married was even more important to God than him. He agreed that was true. I told him God would indeed give him a sign if he asked. I suggested he pray that if they were meant to be together their paths would cross within the week. He said that was precisely what he was going to pray.

The very next day, a Saturday, he came to our home and was sunbathing in the backyard. My husband and I decided we would go to a movie that afternoon and then to dinner and asked if he would like to join us. He suggested we go to lunch instead and he could leave, and we could go to the movie. We all agreed.

My husband got the glass out of the cupboard where we keep all the gifts cards we have received. We had one for a particular Mexican restaurant in the area. My son loves Mexican food and thought it was a great choice. He had to shower up and said we could go ahead and get a table and he would meet us there.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, the hostess sat us at a table in a somewhat crowded area. My husband pointed to a yellow table in a quieter area and asked if we could be seated there. The hostess obliged. We sat down to wait for our son.

The waitress walked up to take our drink order. As I lifted my head up and saw who the waitress was, my heart was racing, and I was almost speechless. There she was, this beautiful young woman with her beautiful blonde hair in pigtails. It took a moment for her to recognize us. I was trying so hard not to a give it all away. She received our drink order and left the table.

My son came into the restaurant about that time and sat down. I looked at him with an incredulous look. I said, “You will not believe in a million years who is not only working at this restaurant but is waiting on this table.” He thought I was kidding and started to chuckle. At that moment, she walked up to the table. I don’t exactly remember what he said, but I do remember him being a bit flustered.

Let’s analyze this scenario for a moment. My son prays if it is meant to be, their paths will cross within the week. The very next day he comes over, and we decide, last minute, to have lunch together. We happen to have a gift card to the same restaurant she is working at. We live in Houston, Texas. Do you know how many restaurants are in Houston, Texas? None of us know she works there. My husband chooses a specific table that she happens to be waiting on. On top of that, she later told us that she was not scheduled to work that day at all. A friend called and asked if she would cover for her, which she did.

The rest is history. This sign from God took place right around Valentine’s Day that year. By August of that year, they were engaged and were married in December. They now have two beautiful daughters and a marvelous Christian family together.

God cares about all the details of our lives. It is not His desire for us to step off the path He has chosen for us. If we are not sure which way to go, all we have to do is ask God, and He will send us direction. He loves us enough to place signposts along our path. We have to be observant of the signs He gives. He also loves us enough to say no. He loves us enough to answer our prayers differently than the way we prayed it. He loves us enough to withhold our desires if it does not fit in with His perfect plan. But you can be assured that He will love you enough always to do what is right in your journey. He will love you enough to lay out a completely different path than the one you envision if that is what is best for you. He will always love you enough.

  • You’re written an amazing story, Cherri and I whole heartedly agree; God is in the details of our lives, and your son’s marriage is living proof of it.

    Blessings,
