whATTRIBUTES: Immutable One

 IMMUTABLE ONE

February 23rd, 2022

Malachi 3:6, ‘”I am God –yes, I AM. I haven’t changed. And because I haven’t changed, you, the descendants of Jacob, haven’t been destroyed, You have a long history of ignoring my commands. You haven’t done a thing I’ve told you. Return to Me so I can return to you,” says the God-of-the-Angel-Armies.’ (MSG)

There are many, many things you can count on about a Holy God, God, your Father. But maybe the most significant is His immutability because it has a bearing on absolutely every other attribute of His. Because He is unchanging, everything else about Him, every other attribute and piece of His character, is influenced by His steadfastness. Because He is unchanging, His love, His grace, His mercy, His goodness, all of Him actually, everything He gives His children, is unchanging as well.

In a world that is wrought with change, we need an immutable God. We need something, Someone, so steadfast and anchored, that there is no doubt of His count-on-ability when the storms hit and life gets roughed up. I have been that person who has tried everything on just in case it fit, searched for completion in empty vessels and acceptance in places filled with holes, hoped to find answers in out-of-the-way places and dead-end intersections. Everyday was designed with change; the past no place I would ever want to return to. But at least it was steady and unchanging; whereas, every moment ahead was like holding a breath and hoping not to pass out waiting to breathe again, never knowing what or who to expect. What amazing grace to settle into, to rest in, the immutability of our steadfast and unchanging God. What hope and assurance!

Ex 3:13-14, ‘Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” (NIV)
