Today’s Hope is a short reading in 2 John. It is the middle letter of the short epistles that John wrote as an elder. He is addressing a “chosen” lady, which some say could be a reference to a church, but most believe it was to a lady who was having church in her home. He is advising her to continue to walk in love as Jesus instructed and to hold to the instructions of the commandments. We know that these two things go hand in hand. If we love Jesus, then it is easy to follow the commandments and instruction we are given as we lead a godly life.
John goes on to warn the lady to be aware of deceivers and those who say that Jesus is not come in the flesh. He also warns her of those who will backslide. One of the major things that stood out as I read this today, was the part about not partaking with those who do not teach true Biblical doctrine. Though we are to love everyone as God does, we are also allowed to know through our Spirit woman when we should walk away from those who have false agendas and teachings.
LadyBug, when John speaks of false teachings and guarding our homes, I believe he is also talking about guarding our hearts against unsound doctrine and false teachings. We must beware of the “spirit check” that our spirit woman feels when we are around ungodly doctrine. We can turn and ‘shut the door’ spiritually to those doctrines. We must be cautious of the endless chatter of gossip so that we are not partaking in the actions of those who are not walking in a manner that is reflective of Jesus.
Let us walk in love and discernment of truth.
