Being Little
By Becky Pico
As we age, the responsibilities of adulthood increase. This naturally requires us to begin to think and act differently — to become a “grown-up.”
This is not bad, in and of itself, it is good. It is necessary, helpful and vital to us, and to all the lives of those around us. However, we don’t want to lose hold of everything that childhood offers us, because the best things about being little are the things that open our hearts and minds to endless possibilities — complete trust, faith, the ability to dream, living in the moment.
Being full of wonder at the world that surrounds us, and easily reaching out to others, in both friendship and forgiveness is all a part of that childhood wonder.
And there are times that thinking like an adult keeps us outside of God’s kingdom.
We can’t receive all of its benefits and blessings, because our adult mindset, and “heart-set”, gets in the way.
I find it interesting that in the Gospels of Mark and Luke, the story of the rich young ruler, comes directly after the little children and Jesus. His mindset and the things his heart were set upon, kept him from entering the Kingdom.
When Jesus called the children, they came. He took them in his arms and blessed them.
Of course, on their way to see him, there were hindrances, in the form of people, who were rebuking them. He said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
Go, humble yourself, remember the best things about being child like and CHANGE!
And take your place with the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, “where religion finally dies, and we lose our selfish pride, Dancin’ with our Father God in fields of grace.”
