The Beginning
Genesis 1:1-2, ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters (NIV).’
There was nothingness, a spacious vastness and a density so thick it was black in the space He was making be something. Above Him, reigned the Heavens; below Him, Earth took form. But the Master felt the aloneness and sadness fill Him to overflowing. One is the loneliest number. Would it always feel this way? He pondered, running fingers gnarled with forever through thinning hair. An idea began to take shape and He squinted through the inky sphere, envisioning His dream. Already His heart beat faster, a new sound echoing in His mind. “Laughter,” He mused. “I like it!”
In the quiet, He spoke, “Ah, I know what I need to do! But I cannot see.” He stroked His chin again. “Let there be light,” He said, and there was light. He was very pleased with it and envisioned a separation between the permeable and the impenetrable. “Day and Night,” He murmured.
Closing His eyes, contour appeared, and with a flourish of His mighty hand, land took shape and water filled voids. The empty canvas before Him came alive as the Master Artist began to sketch His thoughts, and with every brushstroke of creativity, He was blessed. Color replaced the drab murkiness and the earth began to breathe with promise. Creatures suddenly existed, crawling, flying, swimming; all around Him the air pulsed and throbbed, teaming with life.
The Master looked behind and before Him and He was soothed with what was coming to be, but there remained a longing. Deep inside, He knew. The dream He had wouldn’t be silenced and strains of laughter floated on the moving air. “Ah, yes,” He whispered aloud this time as He bent to the ground, scooping up a handful of dust. It fell through His fingers and He bent down to gather more. As the Master mixed it in His palms, it became pliable, and His heart beat even faster. Lovingly, He gazed at what He held; then He bent close, exhaling His breath into the being and inhaling the scent of hope that exuded from what He clutched. He began whispering, the beating of His heart like a promise, like a secret, and the being coughed and sputtered, and at last, opened his eyes for the first time to gaze at His Creator. A spark ignited and the Master felt a fullness grow in Himself. This is Love, He sighed. Contented and peaceful, the Master then rested, not because He was tired but because He wanted to revel in what He had finished.
