Step It Up

Psalm 37:23-24, ‘The steps of a [good and righteous] man are directed and established by the Lord, and He delights in his way [and blesses his path]. When he falls, he will not be hurled down, because the Lord is the One Who holds his hand and sustains him (AMP).’

Have you ever stepped in someone else’s worn out, chewed up bubble gum? Seriously, isn’t that just the worst?! I don’t mean to be a heel about it but it really is disgusting to me to get stuck up in ABC (already been chewed) gum! Especially when you track it on to your nice carpet or curl up your legs and feet beneath you and somebody’s gum then sticks you to yourself.

We can step in some stuff, can’t we? I used to—not just step, but rather—wade in a lot of muck. That’s why I thought perhaps today we could do some SpringCleaning with our steppin’ out methods.

There is definitely a difference between choosing our own path and staying on God’s course, and I think that it is of utmost importance to our God where and how we step also. It garners an abundance of focus in His Word. He promises in Proverbs 3:5-6 that He will make our paths straight as we trust Him, lean on Him and submit to Him. He also warns, in Proverbs 10:9, ‘Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out (NIV).’

So, Proverbs 16:9 says, ‘In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps (NIV).’ I mentioned that I have trekked a long way in sinking sand and miry mud. Since I was old enough to be accountable for my choices, I have made my own maps, designed my own dreams. I went where I wanted, when I wanted, and I hurt others along the way. I ran into a lot of forks in my road, many crossroads, and I did ‘what felt right’, not what was right. My internal navigation system, the Holy Spirit, I am sure, had to cover His eyes plenty of times, because He saw the eventual wreakage that I was headed for.

Everyday my routes get more defined, and they are traveled more smoothly as I stay in step with Him. As I surefootedly tread on the path He has set before me, not veering to the right or the left, the sense of His direction is clear and concise. It is a journey; this trip called life. I don’t take myself to places, or put myself in situations anymore, where I have to figure out how to get out of the mess I got myself in, nor do I look over my shoulder repeatedly anymore, wondering who might be lurking in the shadows. The Holy Spirit is not only a navigation system, but He is also a antennae, and it is important to me now that we have a clear connection.

See, for all my life I traveled the road ‘well-traveled’. I have experienced life; I have been rough on my sole (soul). Now as I begin to look at life in the rear-view mirror, I am realizing how necessary it is for me to go where He leads, and stay where He stays, and not wander ahead or lag behind. That is my prayer for me and my loved ones; that we would be right where He wants us to be, in step with His destination; that our feet would be only on His path, and His alone. Won’t you join us on this journey?

Matthew 7:13-14, ‘Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and few are they who find it.

Come with me in March and let’s clean house!
If you are anything like me, you have kept some things around far too long and now they got to go! And with the Lord’s help, they can!
