ESSENTIALS for Me to Be: Trusting

September 8th, 2021

What’s your ESSENTIAL?

Essential: absolutely necessary; indispensable; the essence of a thing; inherent and intrinsic, vital

Psalm 37:3-5, ‘Keep trusting in the Lord and do what is right in His eyes. Fix your heart on the promises of God, and you will dwell in the land, feasting on His faithfulness. Find your delight and true pleasure in Yahweh, and He will give you what you desire the most. Give God the right to direct your life, and as you trust Him along the way, you’ll find He pulled it off perfectly.’ (TPT)

I decided to look up the word ‘contradiction’ because I was thinking about what an oxymoron trust in anything seems to be currently from the world’s standards. Have you considered how grateful we find ourselves when someone truly keeps their word today? You purchase a money-back guarantee and are surprised when it works. Someone offers to go above and beyond without additional expectations. A person in your life really does stay, even on days when you’re unbearable or you’ve screwed up. He holds the door open for you; she acknowledges your extra effort to be available; you’re given a second or fifth chance and this time you know you’re going to get it right. Trust, and someone who is trustworthy, restores faith in humanity, right?

But what about when a promise is broken? What about when someone does not keep their word or someone who promised they’d never leave gives up on you? What happens when you trust yourself to something that lets you down or when you let yourself down, like you should have excelled in that class, or you believed you’d never be the one getting divorced or hooked on a pain pill or battling a diet plan. When we lose trust in another, and especially in ourselves, the entire world shifts on an unseen axis, and we find it hard to ever look at life the same again. In fact, many never learn to trust again.

Like everything else in life, the ability to trust and be trustworthy is such a contradiction to that of God’s. Every connotation is abstract and negative. The incongruency of contradictions we humans are facing at what seems to be an alarming increase when it comes to qualities such as trust, is depicted by conflict and inconsistency, discrepancy and dispute. I am reminded how fragile and futile our own attempts are in and of ourselves, but trust and trusting are essential in this life, or we will drive ourselves mad always peering around corners and second-guessing every word spoken. For this reason, we can be assured that trust is possible with the aide of the Holy Spirit in us as He directs our choices and helps us travel this journey. He will see us through, over and around the snares that might befall us if we are trusting Him instead of ourselves or others who are also mere mortals.
