I AM

Exodus 33:17-23, ‘So the Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.” And Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me and live.” And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So shall it be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.” (NKJV)’

Many generations had come and gone. He no longer felt amazement by the deliberate choices and the indiscernible wanderings of these beings He had created, but He did feel an overwhelming sadness. He grieved for Eden and the simplicity with which He had breathed everything into existence; the people made it so difficult. He remembered walking in the garden with the man, side by side, and the glory and wonder radiant upon his face as he stared in awe at all the Creator had placed beneath him to tend to and cultivate. He missed the nearness of the man’s companionship and their conversations. Since then, the Master had desecrated the earth and its inhabitants, and He had started over, so to speak, but evil remained and wherever His enemy showed up, that would never change. His enemy wanted the Master’s authority so badly, it was it’s total pursuit and reason for existence. The Master just shook His head once more.

His people had taken to endless wandering. He was weary just watching their movement. They could make a mountain out of a molehill! He mused. He, the Lord God, knew if they would just let Him speak into their discontent once more, they would be so much more efficient. It was a timeless truth now, but if these beings would only realize that the enemy meant evil; his goal was to thwart goodness. BUT GOD intended good to come from the enemy’s nastiness, and He would make what Satan meant a failure, worthy.
Yet, this people continued to complain and it saddened the Lord that they should rather remain enslaved to an idea than follow His faithfulness they had been shown they could trust. They wanted out one minute; the next they wanted back in. He could not figure them out; every inclination was shady, every measure He downloaded to them for their prosperity, every impulse He set in their hearts, they disregarded; these people He yearned for.
The Plan was on the fringe of His thoughts. Suddenly, walls of water stood at attention like centurions and the Master watched the people running from the very thing they had just wanted to return to. They trekked right where the sea had just been lapping at the shore, where they should have sunk in mud instead of treading on dry ground. He spoke and the waters closed behind them; their enemies now forever gone and no longer a threat. In amazement, the children of Israel whom He so adored at once recognized His power but would it be enough to be everlasting? Would they recognize Him tomorrow; would these people acknowledge it was their God Who had delivered them? Would they see the heart of their Creator Who would break down any barrier, tear down any wall, dry up any ocean, command any rescue mission, perform any miracle on their behalf, if He might be found on the other side? Would they now know that this is love?
