Day Sixteen: Generous
Genesis 1:1-5, ‘First this: God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don’t see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God’s Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss. God spoke: “Light!” And light appeared. God saw that light was good and separated light from dark. God named the light Day; He named the dark Night. It was evening, it was morning—Day One.’ (MSG)
When I went to search for verses specific toward generosity in my YouVersion Bible app, I found referenced verse after verse from Genesis, the Story of Us. I was at first puzzled. I had imagined I would come across Scripture about being a cheerful giver and doing unto others; verses like Proverbs 11:25, ‘The generous soul will be made rich. And he who waters will himself be watered.’ I didn’t think I’d come across references for the entire book of Genesis!
The astounding thing, however, is, what God has done for mankind is the most generous act that will ever be done for you and me. He took an empty void and made life grow in dead places, and in the beauty of His plan, He mixed Himself with the earth, and dreamt us in to being. He breathed and we became, and then He fashioned a world where we could safely exist and co-exist.
When that plan got messed up, He determined a fix, and when that failed, He performed miracle after miracle to achieve greatness on our behalf. He inclined His ear to my cry and sheltered me in the cleft of the rock, covering me with His hand while He passed by. He has been after my heart since long before the beginning of time, as His dream included me when He was designing fellowship and purposing a world inhabited by creatures who He would friend and who would friend Him. I imagine a Holy God, lonely and longing for company, and the generosity of the concept is beyond remarkable to me.
Lord God, You are a good, good God, and there is none like You! I am wooed by Your generous love for me, Your grace that abounds, the extravagance of Your affection toward me, the wonder of Your acceptance of me in all my brokenness and disrepair. I am grateful that You chose me to love and to cherish.
Beautiful You, do You know the generosity of this Holy God? He wants you to accept and enjoy His generous offer of everlasting life!
