Does Nursery Art Matter?
By Grace Kwak
What do you remember about nursery art in your room? I don’t remember anything. The earliest memory I have about the art in my room was when I was in 5th-grade; consequently, it was a movie poster that I adored from the movie “The Legend of the Fall.” I don’t even remember Whether or not I watched the movie. However, I vividly remember the look of the poster, the size, and the type of frames. I think that was the first art that I handpicked for my own room.
The things I remember about my early age came mostly from the scenes I created after listening to stories from my mom. I was born in 1980 and raised in a small town in South Korea. At that time, there was no such thing as a nursery room. One thing my mom repeatedly told me about was an Alphabet wallpaper she had put up for me. I still have a birthday photo in front of that ABC wallpaper. My mom was always saying that she was the only trendy mom who cared about kid’s room decoration. She was so proud of me for being able to read the entire Alphabet at a very young age since other kids in my town were not even familiar with A, B, C, or, D. Unfortunately, I don’t remember anything about that fancy ABC wallpaper.
Therefore, if most kids will not remember the art on the walls of their nursery; then what is the point of spending money on nursery room decoration? Without that birthday photo, I would have no idea what my mom is talking about. Is it really worth putting effort into picking the special art for your baby? Why do you have to care so much about nursery art?
There is evidence that nursery art can promote baby’s creativity and logical thinking. There is also proof that babies will use their sight as their primary learning tool during the early stages of their life. The most important aspect of nursery wall decor is that the colors, shapes, and patterns will help your child identify things in the future.
Then, why would a Christian artist like me create nursery art with a blessing word or Bible verse? I believe nursery art is not just for the baby; but rather, it is also for parents. Do you remember my mom’s ABC wallpaper story? That wallpaper meant more for her than it means to me. If you have a nursery art with a bible verse, every time you walk in that room, your eye sees the artwork, and your brain will read the bible verse. It will be your prayer for your baby every day without you realizing it. You will have your story like my mom why you had that art, and why you love that verse. When you see that art in the middle of your busy day, you will stop and appreciate everything about your little one. Your baby’s memory will be attached to that special piece of art with God’s word as a storybook. Even after your child grows up, you will have that prayer and blessing word in your mind, and it will never go away.
The art will continue to bless the baby and parents even after it is old and faded.
