Gift of Encouragement
We are living in perilous times. People of all ages and walks of life are facing challenges and trials they never conceived possible. Some are in despair, to the point of losing hope that things will ever improve. Christians are not exempt, we have our share of troubles too. The Bible is our guide, filled with God’s wisdom on how to use what He’s blessed us with.
Romans 12:6-8 says: We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
It’s amazing how the Lord opens our eyes to see something in scripture we never noticed before. Encouragement is among the gifts listed in Romans 12:6-8. Those blessed with this gift are to encourage others. The Lord showed me how the gift of encouragement can be applied in all of the gifts.
A person with the gift of prophesy may give hope to someone in desperate need of an encouraging message. The person who’s gifted to serve does it unto the Lord, their efforts provides encouragement in whatever means they are serving. Teachers of all kinds, have the opportunity to uplift and encourage others by sharing their wisdom, knowledge, and expertise. Givers provide encouragement when fulfilling a need. They love to share, and give generously from what they have. Leaders have the ability to motivate people, to help them see their potential, and encourage them to never give up. Mercy is listed last; those with this gift have compassion, and are often good listeners. Encouragement is given by showing genuine concern for the person and what they are going through.
The Lord has blessed us all with gifts. I pray from reading Romans 12:6-8, you recognize the ones He’s given you. We can ask the Lord to show us those in need of encouragement, and how to effectively use our gifts. He may lead us to someone we least expected in need of encouragement. Our gifts enable us to become a beacon of light in someone’s darkness. And allow the love of Jesus to shine through us; we could be the only Jesus people see on a given day.
Be encouraged today by the words in the beautiful blessing written in Numbers 6:24-26:
“May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord show you his kindness and have mercy on you. May the Lord watch over you and give you peace.”
