Goal Setting and the Holy Spirit
By Marcela Owen
When setting goals, we may have a vision in mind to start fresh, with new ideas and a brand-new attitude. We may ask ourselves, why not reinvent myself, transform myself, savor life and take the opportunity to take charge of my life NOW. Focus on your goals and projects because the possibilities are limitless. Strive high because it is your time to shine and flourish. However, the most important question is, are we aligned with God’s plans for our lives? For His purpose? Running your ideas and goals by the Holy Spirit and confirming you are on the right path is key. “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” (Romans 8:14)
The Holy Spirit becomes your partner in any endeavor you decide to pursue. Even if you have obstacles or challenges, don’t get caught up in your current situation, start with a new canvas and paint the life that you want. Don’t let anything stop you, our minds are ultra-imaginative, dig in and create the most amazing life you long for. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, to bring ideas to you, and to meet people that are critical to your path. Our minds are notoriously known for challenging us in many ways, let’s use our minds to partner with the Holy Spirit, ask what your life purpose is and take steps toward your goals. We are the only ones that can truly decide to take action, but community and fellowship help us hold us accountable to the commitments we make. Our journey to accomplish any goal requires considerable effort, but it is a lot easier to make progress by consulting with the Holy Spirit every single day!
But how do you get started? Here are a couple of steps to get started:
- Find a place where you can experience a few minutes of silence to collect your thoughts. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you.
- Write down what you want in general terms – health, finances, love, etc. Pray about it to align yourself with God’s purpose for all areas of your life.
- Work each one if more detail – write a few sentences for each one.
- Make mini – plans for each one. Seek accountability and take action.
Writing things down and journaling keeps you motivated and engaged, make it a working document and remember to live in the present. Be present, don’t think about the past or future, stick to today. Sometimes when we dwell on the past or worry about the future our minds get stuck. We want to be as clear as possible. It takes effort and discipline of course, but with God all is possible. “Jesus looked at them and said, with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26) Keep doing it, never give up! Make it a priority, make it part of your daily routine, even if you are working it in your mind for a few minutes. An important step in the foundation of fulfilling your goals and dreams is consistency. It’s important to stay optimistic and stay away from complaining, see the light and the positive in everything. Yes, sometimes we have not so good days, but we have the power through the Holy Spirit to shift emotions and attitudes that do not serve us.
Remember that iron sharpens iron, don’t let anyone or anything convince you that your dreams and aspirations are not doable. And don’t listen to your own mind – that can sometimes create excuses and reasons for you to quit. Don’t let it happen, choose to move negativity aside and stick to your project. Have the courage to overcome excuses and, commit to moving forward. Live above your circumstances because when you have God in your life, there is always a bigger picture, and a different perspective.
Plant seeds and water them… reap what you sow! “But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop” (Luke 8:15)
If you experience a challenge or you feel stuck, it is so important to seek wisdom in challenging situations. To simply face the problem and find a solution, by asking God to hold your hand and give you solutions. Tune in to God’s word and the Holy Spirit, the wisdom and answers are there for you. Remember that being in community is crucial to help you meet your goals. Reach out to other people in your niche and other believers for support.
When things get tough or you feel blocked, you may need to let go of some principles surrounding your fears, ego, pride, selfishness, grudges, etc. The circumstances in your life are not your challenge. The challenge is how you respond to your circumstances. Have faith and trust that your life circumstances are taking you through the journey you are destined to experience. It is God’s path for you. I know It is difficult and sometimes we don’t understand it. I encourage you to trust and believe that it is all coming together for the good.
When pursuing your goals, remember to be patient and to stay positive. It really works. Release your old ways and search for new ways to approach life. The Holy Spirit is always there as your advisor. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (Psalm 32:8) Start to shape and create your life by following God’s plan for you!
