Many times during my walk as a Christian I have heard the term fleecing, and I have always been curious as to whether or not it is an action of faith or doubt. Don’t get me wrong, I am sure I have “fleeced God” as some point in my journey. So, now I have come to a point in my walk where I am curious about so many things, and since I have been facing a difficult decision, it seemed right to understand this term.
God had instructed Gideon to rescue Israel from the Midianites in Judges chapter 6. But Gideon, not believing he had the strength, fleeced God. He asked God to show him a sign so that he would know it was the Lord speaking to him. Later, Gideon uses a wool fleece on the threshing floor to ask God to prove that He will lead Gideon to rescue Israel. Two times, Gideon “fleeced” God so that he would know God was going to be with him.
How often do we do this when God asks us to do something? When we are faced with big decisions that could change our life and affect others, we want that confirmation that we heard God correctly. We want to be sure that it will work out the way it should before we step out on faith. Not only did God answer Gideon’s fleece, but when the time came to fight in Judges chapter 7, God told Gideon to go down and listen to the Midianites in their camp. God again confirmed that Gideon would rescue Israel.
Even when we doubt and fleece God, He will show us He is in control. But, if we waste time fleecing and never step out in faith, we will miss the blessing God has for us in the obedience to His call. Jesus tells us that we must not seek after the sign, but rather, know that the Word of God is the truth and the only thing that we need to be equipped to follow God’s direction.
Dearest LadyBug, do not get caught up in fleecing, but rather lay it before the Lord and know that God will get you through what He has called you to do.
