And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last; I am he that liveth and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen: and have the keys of hell and death. Revelation 1:17-18 (KJV)

What will we do? Will we fall down in worship? MercyMe sang it best, “I can only imagine.”
Being in fear of the Lord is not the fear we have when we are frightened because of something that may harm us. Fearing the Lord is being in reverence to Him. The Greek word for fear in this verse is phobeĆ³ (fob-eh-o) meaning for this instance of fear; to be startled by strange sights. How fitting is that? Paul is telling us that he was so startled that he fell to the feet of our Lord. Even after being with the Son of Man on earth, Paul was still startled to see the Son of God in all His glory! What a sight to behold!

When Paul was told who he was seeing, I can only imagine the feeling. What will we do when we are standing in the presence of Jesus? I want to finish this devotional with a few lines from the MercyMe song “I Can Only Imagine.”

“Surrounded by your glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus
Or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine”
