“I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.” 1 Corinthians 1:10 (NLT)
Today we see hope in Paul’s writing to Corinth. This is one of the longest epistles of Paul. In this section of his letter, Paul is calling the people of Corinth to become united in the thought and purpose of the Kingdom of God. Paul has seen a division among the churches and is beseeching them to stop being divided.
I don’t think Paul is talking about the actual church building. Though more than likely it was sent to a church, I believe that Paul is referring to the people in general as the church. I think that his concern goes beyond the wall of the church to the division that he seems to see among the people in Corinth.
The walls of the building do not make the church. The walls protect those gathered from the elements of the weather. We are not supposed to use the walls to separate one ‘church’ from another. Rather than trying to remain divided about belief and purpose, we should be coming together so that those who are lost may see that following Christ is not about the name on the building. Following Christ is about being willing to be the ‘church’ in the community that we are in the building.
LadyBug let us walk in a united belief and purpose for the furthering of the Kingdom of God. Let the church of the Lord be seen in us outside of the walls so that others will be compelled to seek Jesus.
