Dress for Less

Zechariah 3:3-5, ‘Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.”’ (NIV)

Life has a way of wearing one down. It isn’t for wimps. It is quite easy to struggle putting one foot in front of the other, and abnormal lately it seems, to be bursting with energy and innovations. I think I look tired every day. I think most people I encounter look tired too. Fatigue seems to have settled in faces, drawn wrinkles like roadmaps of where we all have been, weathered leather skin, and eyes that have seen too much, carried weighted sorrow that stopped flowing when the tears dried up.

I wonder if I am the only guilty one of this practice, but I have binge-shopped to bring my heart out of a gutter. There’s nothing that a new outfit can’t fix, I have heard myself grin. Have you ever done that? Gone shopping to heal a hurt, to move past something dragging you down? They’re gonna see me now! gussied up all fine, doing great with my new duds on. I’ll show them! This past year, everything closed, no window shopping even! corrected compulsion constraint and duress-driven shopping.

But, Beautiful You, what about wandering down your hall to peek in your wardrobe to see what stretched out pair of sweats or jaded set of jammies you might be able to throw on, and finding an angel staring back at you? Imagine if that angel commanded you to strip bare, commenting on the filthy rags you had been swathed in for too long, and then offering you fine attire, as your past falls around your feet. Those scraps are no longer needed; your sin has been washed clean, and a garment of praise made of the highest quality is wrapped around you. Seems to me to be a way to SpringClean your closet so that you no longer dress for less, but as a daughter of a King, you can be outfitted for the royal banquet He is preparing for His children.

Isaiah 61:10-11, ‘I will sing for joy in God, explode in praise from deep in my soul! He dressed me up in a suit of salvation; He outfitted me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom who puts on a tuxedo and a bride a bejeweled tiara. For as the earth bursts with spring wildflowers, and as a garden cascades with blossoms, so the Master, God, brings righteousness into full bloom and puts praise on display before the nations (MSG).’

Come with me in March and let’s clean house!
If you are anything like me, you have kept some things around far too long and now they got to go! And with the Lord’s help, they can!
