the Gift: Every Breath
Crawling up the backside of the world, the sun tripped on the mountaintop and spilt across the sky like a jug full of orange juice. Warmth and brilliance overtook the chill of the night just passing and the darkness found itself fleeing to the corners of the earth. The past day was swiftly demolished, but so much goodness seeping out of creation was left behind as proof of all the Giver had accomplished.
“Sunrise!” The word gushed out of Him and felt perfect, He thought, as the new day began. He’d barely moved from His place on the veranda He had built, so pleasing to Him was it to look out at everything below Him that He couldn’t quit taking it all in. A shiver ran the length of His back, however; today was the day He really had been waiting for!
Cautiously, He navigated His way down the spine of the huge tree. He’d have to fix that, He realized. Planks along this trunk would make it easier to come and go, He reckoned. A beautiful breeze greeted Him as He lowered Himself to the earth and the flowers opened their faces to Him as if to say hello. He found curiosity everywhere He looked gazing back at Him.
The Giver knelt to His knees on the soft earth, His hands splayed before Him in the dirt. He scooped up a handful and let it sift between His fingers, the coolness and dirtiness of it feeling good. Slowly, He spit into the pile of dust He held in His hands, mixing it between His fingers and making a mud. Carefully, He began to mold something out of nothing, pulling and shaping and forming, and before He knew it, what He dreamt of came to be. He stared lovingly at who stood before Him as He set it on the ground, and so very gently, He took it and zealously and passionately, He began to give His very breath into this being as He felt the lungs come to life. As His heart beat wilder and faster so did the heart of His being begin to beat wilder and faster.
And suddenly, all at once, His being coughed, then blinked once, twice, and slowly, surely, smiled. A warmth spread through the Giver like nothing He had experienced before. There was a love that pressed itself into the palm of His hand and He deliberately touched the face of His being. He placed His hand upon the being’s chest and felt the beat of the heart beneath His hand and was awed.
“You will need a helper,” He mumbled, “a companion for you, someone to partner with you in our work.” As He spoke, the being’s eyes drifted closed and while he fell into a deep sleep, the Giver began to work stealthily once more, pulling a piece of rib from His being and forming a helpmate. Once He had completed His latest creature, the eyes of His being fluttered open and He saw the gift the Giver had set before him and he was pleased. And at once, the two beings, man and woman, Adam and Eve, had no worries or concerns because they had the gift of each other, and more importantly, they had the gift of the Giver.
Genesis 2:25, ‘The two of them, the man and his wife, were both naked. But they felt no shame.’
